October Update :)

Since we're near the end of first quarter of school, I would like to reflect on some of the topics that we've been studying and learning about so far this school year.
LANGUAGE ARTS: We reviewed the importance grammar & conventions (especially colons, semicolons, and ellipsis...) through our Daily Language Review. We also learned the benefit of personal writing/reflections through our weekly journal questions and guidance goal setting.
Our first quarter bonus word in spelling isPNEUMONOULTRAMICROSCOPICSILICOVOLCANIOSIS.
LITERATURE: We just finished reading our first novel The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare. At times, it seemed a little bit like a Puritan soap opera; however, there are invaluable life lessons learned through the experiences and characters in the book. "People are afraid of things they don't understand."
MATH: Chapters one and two have kept us busy with algebra basics, like expressions, equations, and inequalities.
Please continue to monitor grades using Skyward!

Dr. Seuss's NEW Book :)

Dr. Seuss's new book...
Printed and released 24 years after his death.
Good job to Ellie and Sofie for finding out the title when asked in class!

Congratulations to Karly! First Place Patriot's Pen Winner at VFW Post #9156

Congratulations to 8th grader Karly O Grady!
Karly entered the Veteran's of Foreign Wars Patriots Pen Writing Contest in October.  She was honored at an awards dinner last night at VFW Post #9156  in Sheboygan, where she had the privilege of reading her entry to those in attendance.  Karly's entry placed first place among almost 70 entries in Sheboygan County.  Her award-winning essay earned her $300 in prize money from the VFW post and the Ladies' Auxiliary. Karly's heart-felt and personal tribute to our nation's veterans not only appropriately honored our country's heroes, but also represented Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Schools well.
Congrats on a job well done, Karly!

New Year, New Semester, New Quarter = Fresh Start!

Second semester/third quarter starts this week!
In CPM math, we're currently studying Systems of Equations...graphing and solving linear equations.
In literature, we're reading Collection 5:  A Matter of Style.  Studying and analyzing authors' unique writing styles.  We'll be beginning Across Five Aprils, a historical fiction novel about the US Civil War, soon.
In language arts in coordination with social studies, students are working on researching and writing a paper about a turning point in history.
The question in 7th grade Spanish lately has been Que hora es?  Students know how to ask and answer what time it is in Spanish.  It's a great, practical use of applying their knowledge of numbers!
8th grade Spanish begins at semester!
In advisor, reading STARGIRL and completing an author study of Jerry Spinelli, also the author of CRASH. (The play the students saw as 7th graders!)
